San Mateo, CA January 13, 2009 (PRWEB) — At approximately 7:30 PM Eastern Standard Time, Fusion Airways Flight 353 operating scheduled passenger service from Fort Lauderdale to New York. The aircraft experienced a loss of cabin pressure at 32,500 feet approximately one half hour into the flight. The Captain, Eric Harmatz initiated an emergency descent to approximately 10,000 feet to equalize the cabin pressure.
Upon reaching 10,000 feet, the flight crew decided to divert to the closest airport, Grand Bahamas International Airport. The aircraft landed at Grand Bahamas airport approximately 30 minutes after the initial cabin pressurization fault.
Of the 136 passengers onboard, one passenger was treated by hospital personnel for difficulty breathing. The passenger was admitted into Grand Bahamas hospital, and is expected to be discharged in the morning. No other passengers or crew members were injured during the incident.
“This incident is a prime example of how to properly handle an in-flight emergency, and we applaud our crew for their professional efforts that ensured all of the passengers of Flight 353 escaped unharmed.” Fusion Airways said in a statement.
A Boeing 737-700 aircraft was sent to Grand Bahamas airport to carry the stranded passengers to their final destination of John F. Kennedy International Airport. 8 Passengers were re-accommodated on another airline at their request.
Fusion Airways is fully cooperating with the NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration and an investigation has been launched as to the cause of the depressurization.
